The Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Hanok-Style International Convention Center, whose construction began in 2018, has completed about four years of painstaking work and revealed its grandeur. Built on the site of the former Reserved Officers' Training Corps, the facility covers a total floor area of 6,008 m², with two basement levels and one aboveground level. It houses one large convention hall, nine seminar rooms, and various amenities including a coffee shop and a restaurant.
In particular, the large convention hall located on the second basement level is a spacious venue that can accommodate 300 people at once, making it suitable for hosting international academic events. The first basement level includes exhibition and practice spaces for artists and cultural practitioners, which are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of the region's cultural content industry.
JBNU devoted considerable effort to ensuring the facility's successful operation, even conducting related policy research to explore ways the center could be used to benefit the local community prior to the opening of the International Convention Center.
Accordingly, JBNU will hold a combined academic and cultural event for local residents under the National University Development Program to commemorate the opening of the International Convention Center. To prepare for the COVID-19 situation, self-test kits will be distributed free of charge; entry will be allowed only after a self-test shows no abnormalities, and a vaccine pass will also be implemented.
The academic program, held in the Convention Hall of the International Convention Center on the 24th from 1:00 PM, will include keynote presentations exploring future development directions for Jeollabuk-do through carbon neutrality amid the climate change crisis.
In addition, a variety of performances including Western music, Korean music, and Korean dance prepared by the Department of Music, the Department of Dance, and the Department of Korean Music will be presented. For residents who cannot attend in person due to the COVID-19 situation, the event will be streamed live on YouTube (JBNU - YouTube).
In addition, a media façade that will lavishly illuminate the exterior of the International Convention Center at night will be displayed from February 21 to March 20, nightly from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, offering a spectacle to citizens strolling in Deokjin Park. During the daytime, a collaborative exhibition prepared by JBNU Department of Fine Arts faculty, faculty from other regional flagship national universities, and faculty from private universities in Seoul will run from February 24 to March 10.
* Media facade: a compound of 'facade' and 'media' referring to the implementation of media functions on a building's exterior by installing LED lighting on the outer wall.
President Kim Dong-won said, “The opening of the International Convention Center will relieve Jeonju City's long-standing need for a suitable venue to host international academic conferences. Through linkage with Deokjin Park, it will greatly contribute to revitalizing the region's tourism industry and to strengthening the competitiveness of cultural and artistic content in the region long renowned for its artistic tradition.”
