Professor Hyung-gi Kim's team (Division of Computer Science and Engineering, College of Engineering) received the '2022 Gaheon Academic Award' presented by the Gaheon Sindorico Foundation.
The Gaheon Academic Award selects the single best paper published over one year in the proceedings of the Korean CDE Society that demonstrates the highest academic contribution. The award carries a cash prize of KRW 20 million and a commemorative plaque.
The team, jointly with the research team of Professor Moon Du‑hwan of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Korea University, has been researching deep learning-based object recognition technology within engineering drawings. They published a paper titled 'An Image-Format P&ID Recognition Method Using Synthetic Data and Text–Symbol Integrated Detection,' which was recognized for its academic excellence.
The paper proposes a method to automate the drawing identification process, which experts previously performed manually, by applying deep learning techniques. This is intended to automate the generation process of digital P&ID diagrams used in the process-plant industry.
Professor Hyung-gi Kim said, 'There is a growing demand across various engineering fields for practical and industrial applications of deep learning technology. I regard receiving the Gaheon Academic Award as encouragement to continue conducting research that directly contributes to industrial development, and I will work diligently toward that goal.'
