Jeonbuk National University Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (Director, Professor Jeon Je-seong) will make public on YouTube the 4th Southeast Asia Regional Trends Briefing (hereinafter, the Briefing), held on the 20th and 21st of last month in cooperation with the Korean Association for Southeast Asian Studies and the Seoul National University VIP Overseas Expansion Localization Support Project Group.
The Briefing featured contributors to the journal Southeast Asian Studies' country-review special issue, who summarized last year’s trends and presented their findings. Members then listened to and responded to expert discussions.
A large number of Southeast Asia specialists participated, offering presentations and discussions covering ASEAN developments in 2021, from the establishment of long-term rule in Cambodia to the inauguration of new leadership in Vietnam, political polarization in Thailand, the collapse of the Muhyiddin government in Malaysia, Singapore’s search for a 'New Normal,' the early ignition of the presidential campaign in the Philippines, and democracy in Indonesia.
In particular, results from the "Korea–ASEAN Youth Mutual Perception Survey" conducted by the ASEAN-Korea Centre were also shared.
The Briefing began in spring 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by uploading lecture videos to YouTube. Since last year it evolved into real-time video conferences using Zoom, was held twice in that format, and the recorded videos were shared on YouTube.
This year’s Briefing videos, which drew nearly 100 registrants, were also posted by country.
