Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) has decided to actively pursue the normalization of in-person classes in the upcoming spring semester as part of the phased return to normal. Last year, JBNU conducted 59.5% of classes in person during the second semester. By normalizing in-person instruction, the university aims to actively prevent students' academic and social–emotional learning losses.

This approach follows the Ministry of Education's phased return-to-normal plan announced last year and the Ministry's work plan for this year.

Accordingly, JBNU will adopt in-person instruction for all courses as the basic principle for spring semester class operations, and will permit remote classes only when real-time communication between instructors and students is possible.

However, stricter and more thorough infection control measures will be applied to in-person classes. Seating will be arranged with one empty seat between students. In lecture spaces without fixed seats, such as gymnasiums or dance studios, seating will be limited to one person per 4 square meters. The university will also ensure the placement of disinfecting supplies in classrooms and adequate ventilation, and will thoroughly implement other infection control measures.

Exceptions allowing some remote lectures will be limited to courses approved by the university president due to course characteristics or classroom conditions, or to large-scale lectures with more than 80 enrolled students. Approval for remote instruction is recommended to be within 20% of course instruction, and for cases exceeding 50%, the university plans to enhance instructional quality through synchronous video lectures or simultaneous in-person and remote teaching. Assessments will also be conducted in person as a principle.

In line with these measures for conducting in-person classes, JBNU is concentrating administrative efforts on infection control measures such as staff assignments for classroom sanitation and securing budgets for and installing partitions.

President Kim Dong-won said, "We have decided to actively pursue in-person classes to address learning losses and the reduction in social and emotional interaction caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to facilitate the transition to a phased return to normal. As in-person instruction is the guiding principle, we will do our utmost to ensure strict compliance with infection control rules so that our students can restore their everyday university life."
