Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) (President Kim Dong-won) ranked 11th in research funding among four-year universities nationwide. In addition, research funding per faculty member was the highest among national flagship public universities.

According to the '2021 University Research Activity Survey Analysis Report' released by the National Research Foundation of Korea on the 9th, JBNU's research funding for 2020 amounted to KRW 152,439,000,000.

Research funding per faculty member was KRW 144,770,000, placing JBNU first among national flagship public universities excluding Seoul National University (the national university corporation). Among all four-year universities, it ranked ninth. With 2,731 research projects, JBNU was also ranked ninth among four-year universities nationwide, further solidifying its status as a research-centered university.

Excluding external research funding, internal research funding amounted to KRW 15,944,000,000, ranking sixth domestically. By academic field, JBNU ranked ninth nationally in engineering, agricultural and life sciences (agriculture, fisheries and marine sciences), and interdisciplinary fields, demonstrating strong research competitiveness.

Over the years, JBNU has established a dedicated research office and operated differentiated research and academic promotion programs to provide faculty with an environment conducive to high-quality research, laying the groundwork for its advancement as a research-centered university.

To build the foundation of a research-centered university, JBNU established branches of the Industry-University Cooperation at specialized campuses and the medical school to implement outreach research support administration focused on field researchers.

In addition, JBNU identifies and nurtures star faculty in research fields and provides awards for high-quality publications. It also offers tailored support for the development of various academic disciplines, such as the 'Research Foundation Building Project' for the humanities and social sciences and the 'Support Program for Scholarly Research Presentations in the Arts' for the arts.

Bu Sang-don, Vice-President of the Office of Research at JBNU, said, 'The passion of faculty to change the world through research, combined with active support from the university headquarters, is strengthening our status as a research-centered university. Based on this analysis, we will further reinforce our response system to establish a research-centered university foundation, including coordinating responses with government ministries, promoting medium- to large-scale collaborative research, and discovering and nurturing star researchers.'

Meanwhile, this survey analyzed data submitted by each of the nation's 413 universities based on the 2021 university information disclosure. It targeted full-time faculty and affiliated research institutes for the year 2020. The analysis used sources such as the Korea Researcher Information, KRIMS, and the Korean Citation Index.
