Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) has decided to freeze tuition for the 2022 academic year. The decision aims to share the economic burden faced by parents and students amid strained household finances caused by COVID-19 and to fulfill the university's social responsibilities as a national flagship university.

This marks the 14th year that JBNU has either reduced or frozen tuition since it first froze tuition in 2009. In 2012, tuition was reduced by 5.6%.

JBNU recently convened the tuition review committee and announced that, although the prolonged tuition freeze has placed severe strain on the university's finances, it made this decision reflecting calls to share the socially intensified hardships resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The university plans to address deteriorating finances and budget shortfalls caused by the sharp decline in the school-age population through government funding programs, securing research grants, and fundraising for development funds.

In particular, to prevent the prolonged tuition freeze from affecting student education and employment support, the university will pursue fiscal austerity measures and work to secure national scholarship funding and attract government funding programs related to education.

Kim Nam‑su, Director of Student Affairs, said, "As a national flagship university, JBNU has decided to maintain frozen undergraduate tuition for the 14th consecutive year to minimize the economic burden on students and their parents in line with the government's tuition relief policy. We will actively attract external funding, such as government funding programs and research grants, to ensure that student welfare and education do not suffer."
