"Artificial Intelligence with Python," co-authored by Professor Il-Seok Oh and Professor Jin-Seon Lee of Woosuk University, was selected as a Sejong Book for 2021.
This is the fourth time Professor Il-Seok Oh's work has been chosen, following Pattern Recognition (2009), Computer Vision (2015), and Machine Learning (2018).
The book presents artificial intelligence theory with a focus on deep learning through 79 hands-on Python programming exercises. Readers can learn core AI theories such as convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and reinforcement learning through various examples, formulas, and graphs.
In addition, practical exercises—such as a robot journalist, a home guardian, Bitcoin price prediction, arranging children’s songs, a fashion-generation business, and an Omok program—help develop AI implementation skills.
Professor Oh used this book as the textbook for an artificial intelligence course offered by the Division of Computer Science and Engineering in the first semester of last year. He recorded the lectures and uploaded them to YouTube. They can be found by searching "Il-Seok Oh Artificial Intelligence" on YouTube.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Publication and Culture Industry Promotion Agency annually select books of high value in general and academic readership as "Sejong Books." Selected titles are distributed to public libraries nationwide through a publication support program.
Professor Il-Seok Oh has been a professor in the Division of Computer Science and Engineering at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) since 1992. He graduated from the Department of Computer Engineering at Seoul National University and earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from KAIST. He served as editor-in-chief of the SA (Software and Applications) journal of the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers and of the journal of the Korea Contents Association.
His main research areas are machine learning, computer vision, and pattern recognition. His books include IT CookBook, Computer Vision (Hanbit Academy, 2014; selected as an Excellent Scholarly Book by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea in 2015), Pattern Recognition (Kyobo Book Centre, 2008; selected as an Excellent Scholarly Book by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2009), C Programming and Styling (Kyobo Book Centre, 2009), and Computer Story (Kyobo Book Centre, 2011). He also translated App Inventor 2 (Hanbit Academy, 2015).
