Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Hanok Technology Comprehensive Center (Center Director Professor Nam Hae-gyeong) was selected as an 'Excellent Institution for Training Hanok Specialists' by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Architecture and Urban Research Institute (AURI), which implemented the program for the first time in 2021.
The selection of this excellent educational institution certifies educational organizations under the Act on the Promotion of Hanok and Other Architectural Assets. The evaluation was conducted through document review and on-site inspections.
The JBNU Hanok Technology Comprehensive Center has been developing the Gochang Campus as a Hanok-specialized campus and has established the country’s top facilities and equipment there to conduct education. It has operated long-term programs such as the Hanok Design Specialist Training Project and the Hanok Skilled Workforce Training Project, as well as short-term programs including Ondol Training, Hanok Training for Senior Public Officials, Hanok Training for Foreigners, Hanok Training for Teachers, Youth Hanok Experience Program, and Children’s Hanok Experience Program, producing over 1,500 graduates to date.
In addition, the center has held more than ten Hanok exhibitions annually both overseas—in the United States, Japan, Greece, and other countries—and domestically. It has presented on Hanok at international academic conferences such as UNESCO events. For the first time in the field of architecture, the course 'Introduction to Hanok' was selected for K-MOOC and is being offered at national universities across Korea and universities in the Jeonbuk region.
Recently, the center has exported Hanok to Vietnam, Algeria, and the United States, and is pursuing export negotiations with Canada, Indonesia, and Brazil, thereby making a significant contribution to the spread of Korean Wave culture through Hanok.
Notably, this year, for the first time in Korea, a 'Department of Hanok Architecture' will be established at the Gochang Campus to commence full-scale education for training Hanok specialists. It is expected that systematic and specialized Hanok education will be provided by linking with the graduate program 'Hanok Studies' already established at JBNU. Practical training will be led by holders of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, and theoretical instruction will be provided by JBNU faculty to deliver the country’s highest-quality education.
