Opening of the Second Mahan Special Exhibition

Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Museum, as part of the university specialization project, has planned and will hold a special exhibition on the Sejeon-ri site in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology & Anthropology at JBNU (Department Head Lee Hyung-woo). The exhibition, titled 'Sejeon-ri Site and Mahan as Seen by Young Archaeologists,' will be held from December 22 (Wed)–March 31, 2022 (Thu) in the JBNU Museum Special Exhibition Hall. The Sejeon-ri site, located in Songdong-myeon, Namwon, North Jeolla Province, is a Mahan village site and the second installment in the Mahan series following the Sangun-ri Mahan Special Exhibition.

The Namwon Sejeon-ri Site Revived

The Namwon Sejeon-ri site is the first-discovered Mahan village site in the eastern mountainous region of Honam. It was reported to the relevant authorities in November 1984, and excavations were carried out in three campaigns from 1985 to 1986. The extensive plain site yielded 26 circular house sites and a large quantity of Mahan artifacts. Although some archaeological findings have been整理, comprehensive research outcomes have not yet been consolidated. In addition, no standalone special exhibition has previously been held, making this an intriguing subject for many researchers and the public.

This special exhibition is led primarily by young archaeologists who present the Sejeon-ri site to the public. Just as the site first attracted attention when discovered during land preparation, the organizers hope this opening will stimulate increased research and interest in the Sejeon-ri site and Mahan. It comes 35 years after the excavation was first reported to the academic community.

About the Exhibition

The exhibition is organized into three parts. Part I, 'Sejeon-ri Sleeping in Photo Albums,' presents archival materials and records related to the excavations. Part II, 'Sejeon-ri Breathing Again,' features a variety of pottery excavated from Sejeon-ri. Part III, 'Young Archaeologists Uncover the Reality of Sejeon-ri,' showcases poster presentations by young archaeologists, revealing their interests and inquiries.

Visitors can also take commemorative photographs with the Sejeon-ri excavation site as a backdrop. A session to collect memories from students and local residents who participated in the excavation will be provided, and active participation from visitors is anticipated. In particular, another Mahan exhibition on the museum's third floor (Ancient Culture Hall) can also be viewed, offering an opportunity for comparative observation of periods and cultural aspects.
