Choi Hyo-sang, a fourth-year student in the Department of Quantum System Engineering, received the 'Young Scientist' Award at the recently held Annual Conference on Radiation Technology Utilization and Industry Promotion.

The Korea Radiation Promotion Association holds this conference annually to promote the radiation industry. It recognizes individuals who have made outstanding achievements in promoting the use of radiation and radioactive isotopes and in enhancing safety.

Starting this year, the program was expanded to solicit nominations of 'Young Scientists' among undergraduate and graduate students with high development potential, in order to recognize and encourage their achievements.

Although he is an undergraduate, Choi has participated as an undergraduate research assistant in graduate-level research and has taken a leading role in multiple national research and development projects in the field of radiation safety.

In particular, he is participating in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries–funded project 'Development of Smart Processing Technology for Seafood,' where he is developing a device to monitor radioactive substances in seafood products. He is also involved in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety–sponsored project 'Development of Protective Technologies for Radiation Disaster Evacuation Facilities,' working to develop safe resident evacuation procedures and protection standards in the event of complex radiological disasters.

Choi expressed his gratitude to the professors and senior researchers who provided considerable support that enabled him to participate in the research as an undergraduate, and stated, 'I will graduate from the undergraduate program in February next year and plan to continue more advanced research through graduate study.'
