A hanok of JBNU, which has long worked to globalize hanok, is finally being sent to Vietnam.

Having signed successive memoranda and other agreements for exports with countries such as Vietnam, Algeria, and the United States, JBNU on the 9th carried out loading operations to ship hanok components for export to Vietnam.

On that day, at JBNU's Gochang Campus, the first batch of pillars, main beams, rafters, roof tiles, foundation stones, and other components needed for the construction of a hanok pavilion to be built in Quy Nhon City, Vietnam, were loaded.

The hanok components loaded onto the vehicles that day will be transported to Busan and then shipped to Vietnam by sea. After local construction through February, the hanok pavilion is expected to be completed in early March.

Over the years, JBNU has planned construction over about a decade in Algeria of Korean traditional hanok pavilions and traditional gardens, and in Vietnam of hanok pavilions, a promotional center, a community center, and a daycare center.

JBNU also signed an agreement to build a hanok village of about 40 houses in the State of Georgia in the United States, and is currently carrying out drawing work and component fabrication.

These hanok were directly produced by graduates who founded startups after completing JBNU's hanok-related programs. Technical guidance and the drawings were reviewed and finalized with the department faculty, and the components were likewise produced through the combined efforts of the faculty and the startup founders, adding significance as a model in which education and industry have become one.

Nam Hae-kyung, Director of the Hanok Technology Comprehensive Center (Professor, Department of Architectural Engineering), who is overseeing the project, said, "We are very pleased that hanok exports, which until now had proceeded only on paper due to COVID-19, are finally coming onto a proper track. We will work to achieve good results with ongoing projects in Canada, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, and others so that JBNU's hanok can be spread worldwide."

Meanwhile, JBNU plans to establish a Department of Hanok Architecture at its Gochang Campus from next year to promote a specialized hanok workforce development project and to establish a forward base for hanok exports.
