The passion and volunteer spirit of JBNU students, hotter than the blazing sun, reach across the globe this summer break. With university support, JBNU students are expanding their activities onto the world stage during the summer recess.

Recently, JBNU students—who have demonstrated the university's top ranking among national universities in the area of internationalization in various evaluations—are heading out into the world through the "overseas volunteer activities" and "Global Leader Project" programs.

On the 18th, JBNU announced its global outreach with a send-off ceremony and a large-scale flash mob for students departing for overseas volunteer activities.

This summer, 515 students will participate in overseas volunteer activities. Divided into 15 teams, the students plan to share JBNU's values of compassion and service in seven countries, including the Philippines, Nepal, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, and Laos.

Among them, the JBNU Overseas Medical Volunteer Team— which has visited developing countries every year to practice medical charity—will dispatch its largest-ever contingent. A volunteer team led by Professor Yang Kyung-moo of the Medical School will operate in Cambodia; a team led by Professor Shin Hyo-geun of the School of Dentistry will operate in Vietnam; a team led by Professor Park Joo-mi will operate in the Philippines; and a team led by Professor Lee Ki-chang of the College of Veterinary Medicine will operate in Mongolia to carry out medical volunteer activities.

In particular, following the send-off ceremony, President Seo Geoseok and the entire volunteer group attracted attention by performing a large-scale flash mob to Psy's "Gentleman," intended to share and reaffirm the values of giving and love on the global stage.

President Seo Geoseok said, "JBNU regards service as important as education and employment during university life. We require all students to complete a social service course, thereby fostering individuals who combine intellect with a spirit of service. Wherever you practice giving on this planet, never forget that you are proud members of JBNU, and make this a valuable opportunity to understand others and the world."

In addition, since 2008 JBNU has dispatched students to partner universities abroad through the "Global Leader Project" program to cultivate a global mindset and improve language skills. This summer, the university will send a total of 311 students to partner universities.

The dispatched students held a send-off and orientation at 4:00 p.m. on June 21 at Jinsudang Gain Hall, attended by President Seo Geoseok and others, where they pledged to grow as global leaders during the summer break.

The universities to which students will be dispatched this summer include 149 to the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom, 30 to the University of Malaya in Malaysia, 32 to De La Salle University in the Philippines, 31 to National University (Manila), and 69 to the University of the Visayas. This represents more than double last year’s 149 students.

Students will receive support from the university for airfare and host-university tuition, study for eight weeks during the summer break, and can earn up to six credits.

Lee Jeong-mi, a fourth-year chemistry student departing for the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, said, "I am very happy to have the opportunity to stay and study at an overseas university with the university's support ahead of graduation. I will use this opportunity to broaden my horizons and improve my language skills."

President Seo Geoseok said, "Every year, JBNU dispatches thousands of students abroad through a variety of programs that foster a global mindset. Through diverse programs that help students grow into global leaders, many students will be able to build a solid foundation to overcome intense competition and become future-leading global talents."
