In March, Seung Su-geun, who works at our university, entrusted 149 works and personal effects of his late father, the painter Seung Dong-pyo, to the Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) University Museum. Through this, the museum held a special exhibition titled "Painter Seung Dong-pyo" on May 22, providing an opportunity to reexamine the artist Seung Dong-pyo.
News of another donation to the JBNU University Museum has followed. After the opening of the "Painter Seung Dong-pyo" exhibition, Professor Byung-ho Yang of the Department of Korean Language & Literature expressed his willingness to donate calligraphic works he had long kept to the museum.
The work Professor Yang donated is a calligraphic rendering of a prose piece by the Song dynasty writer and statesman Su Dongpo (蘇東坡), titled "Isi Sanbang Jangseogi (李氏山房藏書記)", written by Jiljae (質齋) Kim Hyung-gyo (金泂嶠).
This donated piece, a six-panel folding-screen calligraphy written in elegant and flowing running script, praises the book as "the only object that, more than precious items such as ivory, water-buffalo horn, pearls, and jade, or useful items such as metal, stone, plants, silk thread, hemp cloth, and grains, delights the ear and eye, does not disappear through use, and bestows wisdom and propriety."
Because the museum judged that this work contains instructive content on the pleasure of reading and the benefits of books, it has decided to hold a small exhibition promoting reading to offer many people the opportunity to view it.
Lee Tae-young, Director of the University Museum, said, "The spread of a culture of donating artifacts is a beautiful and highly valuable act aimed at sharing the beauty of our cultural heritage with many people." He added, "I sincerely thank Professor Byung-ho Yang for actively donating this work, and we will work to widely promote the beauty of donation culture and take the lead in preserving cultural heritage through exhibitions of donated works."
