An industry-oriented LED plant factory capable of cleanly and rapidly cultivating various vegetables using LED light sources has been established at JBNU's Iksan Specialized Campus as the largest facility of its kind in Korea.

JBNU held a completion ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on May 2 at the LED Agri-bio Fusion Technology Research Center located on the Iksan Specialized Campus. About 200 people attended, including President Seo Geoseok, Kim Jae-hong, 1st Vice Minister of Industry, Governor Kim Wan-ju of Jeollabuk-do, Mayor Lee Han-soo of Iksan, Jeon Jeong-hee, a member of the National Assembly's Industry, Trade and Energy Committee, and corporate representatives.

An LED plant factory is a systematic form of agriculture in which light, air, temperature, and nutrients are artificially controlled in a controlled facility to produce plants in a planned manner, independent of natural environmental conditions. This allows accelerated, pesticide-free cultivation.

Built at a cost of approximately KRW 1.6 billion and covering an area of 330 m², the LED plant factory is equipped with eight-tier cultivation facilities and a cultivation area of 1,155 m². It is the largest facility in the country and features 3,500 LED fixtures, a climate control system, and nutrient solution supply facilities.

It can produce 80–145 kg per day of seven types of leafy vegetables, including lettuce, chicory, and bok choy. These vegetables will be sold at locations such as Hyundai Department Store through distribution by Hyundai Green Food.

President Seo Geoseok said, "The LED plant factory is one of the representative results of convergence technology combining IT and BT, and it has established a foundation for significant advancement of Korea's agri-biotech technology. We will spare no support to enable the LED plant factory to play a pivotal role in the development of the LED agri-bio industry in Korea."
