JBNU was the only domestic university selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in the 2013 'Hanok Design Professional Training Program' as the top educational institution for three consecutive years. This has demonstrated JBNU's status as the nation's representative university for hanok education.
Through this program, JBNU, with support from the Ministry, has systematically provided six months of theoretical and practical training in hanok design to licensed architects and prospective architects since 2011.
Since the program began, JBNU has been evaluated as the most outstanding institution nationwide because it offers differentiated instruction and achieves high educational effectiveness.
JBNU, centered on the Hanok Construction Technology Comprehensive Center (Director Nam Hae‑kyung), conducts theoretical instruction at the Jeonju Campus and practical training at the Gochang Campus.
With participants from Seoul, Busan, Gangwon Province, and even foreign architects, the program at JBNU offers not only special lectures and theoretical courses on hanok, but also hanok design practicums, construction and field visits to hanok villages, and hands-on hanok construction training, providing specialized education.
In particular, JBNU has assembled a renowned faculty of hanok experts, including master carpenter Choi Ki‑young, a Living Human Treasure, to deliver specialized instruction.
In addition, trainees actively engage in community service while participating in practicums, taking part in activities such as painting old fences as part of Jeonju's Happy House project and providing free home repairs for elderly people living alone in Gochang and Wanju, thereby setting a social example.
Beyond this curriculum, as part of the 'Project to Create the Most Korean-Style University,' JBNU is carrying out various hanok education programs and projects to build a Korean-style campus, earning recognition as the undisputed center of hanok education in Korea.
Last year, JBNU provided hanok education to middle and high school students nationwide through the Ministry's pilot 'Youth Hanok Construction Experience Camp,' and during vacations it operated an international school to offer hanok education programs for foreigners.
Notably, JBNU is the only institution in the country to offer a graduate major in hanok, and it also offers an undergraduate liberal arts course, 'Introduction to Hanok,' providing specialized education linked to the local community. Last year, JBNU signed an MOU with Jeonju City on hanok construction, agreeing to collaborate on building hanok public facilities in Jeonju.
Nam Hae‑kyung, Director of the Hanok Construction Technology Comprehensive Center, said, "As a hub university located in the most Korean city, JBNU feels a unique responsibility to be the nation's best in hanok-related education, and therefore provides more diverse and systematic hanok education than any other institution. Having been selected as the top institution for three consecutive years, we will redouble our efforts in both theoretical and practical hanok training and strive to benefit the local community through ongoing pro bono contributions of our talents."
