Faculty and Students United to Create a Beautiful Campus

Our campus is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the country for spring blossoms. In particular, the area around the College of Humanities benches—commonly called "Inven"—features well-maintained natural scenery and a variety of modestly beautiful flowers. It has become a popular healing space not only for university members but also for local residents.

This beautiful space was created through the "College of Humanities Green & Clean Campaign," launched in 2003, with active financial support from faculty and voluntary participation by students.

To further revitalize the College of Humanities Green & Clean Campaign—which until now has been carried out by some faculty and students—and to encourage the students participating in campus environmental work, College of Humanities faculty have donated scholarship funds, adding warmth to the effort.

Professors Ham Han-hee (Department of Archaeology & Anthropology) and Heo In-sun (Department of Japanese Language & Literature) recently donated a fund of approximately 30 million won to the Jeonbuk National University Development Foundation to be used as scholarships for students who participated in the College of Humanities' environmental volunteer activities.

To support environmental improvements around the College of Humanities, Professors Ham Han-hee (Department of Archaeology & Anthropology), Heo In-sun (Department of Japanese Language & Literature), Jo Hwa-rim (Department of French Studies), Yang Byung-ho (Department of Korean Language & Literature), and Park Yeon-hee (Department of Mathematics Education), along with Professor Emerita Kim Po-ok (retired August 2009), former Administrative Office Directors of the College of Humanities Go Gwang-taek and Jeong Geuk-seop, and staff member Choi Seong-hoon of the College of Humanities, have pooled modest contributions to create a communal fund. They have used this fund to provide scholarships and to join volunteer activities, thereby encouraging students.

However, the faculty decided not to let this remain a private initiative. They organized the fund for systematic management in order to carry on the spirit of the College of Humanities Green & Clean Campaign and to provide more scholarships to participating students, instilling pride and a sense of accomplishment in them.

Professor Ham Han-hee said, "With the care and interest of faculty, staff, and students, we have kept the area around the College of Humanities beautiful. We have established a scholarship fund to further expand these efforts. I hope this scholarship will be developed more systematically so that students can take greater pride in the campus they have cultivated themselves."
