“Class of 2013 freshmen, Spread Your Dreams at JBNU!”

Jeonbuk National University (JBNU)'s 2013 academic year entrance ceremony was held on February 28, 2013, at 2:00 PM at the Samsung Arts Center, with President Seo Geoseok, heads of offices, divisions and bureaus, deans of colleges and graduate schools, university officials, new students and parents in attendance.

At the ceremony, President Seo Geoseok granted admission to 5,427 candidates for the 2013 academic year. Song Sang-jin, a student in the Divsion of Public Science, took the oath as the representative of the new students.

The number of admissions by program this year was 4,399 for the undergraduate program, 721 for the master’s program, and 367 for the doctoral program.

At the same ceremony, scholarship certificates were awarded to 43 outstanding freshmen, including Ryu Ha-young of the School of International Studies, providing benefits such as full tuition waivers until graduation, a KRW 1,000,000 per semester tuition subsidy, and globalization scholarships to support overseas training. In total, more than half of the incoming students—3,252 students—received scholarships totaling KRW 4,570,000,000.

This represents a significant increase in both the number of recipients and the amount compared with last year. Although JBNU has reduced or frozen tuition for five consecutive years through this year, scholarship support has increased annually.

In his entrance address, President Seo Geoseok said, "I sincerely congratulate you on becoming proud members of JBNU today," and added, "We will nurture new students into the kind of outstanding individuals the world needs, without falling short of your expectations."

He continued, "For new students to truly grow into leaders who can guide the world, it is important to set a grand and firm goal in your heart. Once you set a goal, if you continuously challenge yourself and lead a passionate university life, in four years you will become one of Korea's top talents and be welcomed anywhere."

Parent Orientation for New Students Also Well Received

"I am relieved to know that the university my child will attend for four years has such excellent facilities and an outstanding educational system."

On the afternoon of February 28, when the entrance ceremony was held, parents of new students gathered separately at the JBNU Academic and Cultural Center. The University invited parents to the "New Student Parents' Visit Day" to introduce their children's university life, academic schedule, and the University's vision.

This event, held separately from the entrance ceremony each year, invites parents to campus and, through briefings and campus tours, presents an unvarnished view of the university their children will attend. It greatly helps students and parents jointly plan appropriate university life and career paths.

The event included introductions to the University's major academic systems and student support programs, which received strong positive responses from parents.

After the briefing, parents toured key facilities such as the state-of-the-art electronic library, residence halls, and the museum, seeing firsthand the environment where their children will live.

After the campus tour, parents visited each college for meetings with deans and department chairs, further strengthening trust between the University and parents.

A parent whose child was admitted to the College of Engineering said, "I had been very curious about what kind of educational system and facilities the university my child will attend has. Through this event, I gained the impression that JBNU is highly excellent and well equipped in education and employment support. I hope the University will make further efforts so that our children can pursue their university life in a better environment."

Another parent added, "At today's event I was able to visit the department my child will attend and hear in detail what will be taught and the characteristics of the department, which will be of great help in setting a career path. I was deeply moved that JBNU invited parents and prepared this briefing."
