President Seo Geoseok was elected Chair of the Korean Council for University Education (hereinafter KCUE).
At the KCUE's general meeting held in Seoul on the 18th, he was unanimously elected by attending member universities as the 19th Chair of KCUE. He will serve a one-year term beginning April 8.
President Seo said, "I feel a heavy responsibility in taking on the leadership of the Korean Council for University Education, which guides higher education in our country, amid a declining school-age population and a crisis in university finances. In light of KCUE's founding purpose to improve the quality of university education and to enhance institutional autonomy, I will do my utmost to improve university competitiveness through smooth communication with member university presidents."
President Seo graduated from Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) and received his Ph.D. from Chuo University in Japan. He has served as a professor at JBNU since 1982. He assumed office as JBNU's 15th President in December 2006 and, after receiving renewed confidence from the university community, has served as the 16th President since 2010.
He previously served as chair of the Council of Deans of National and Public Law Schools; chair of the National Council of Presidents of Public Universities; Senior Vice-Chair of KCUE; president of the Korean Society of Juvenile Law; and president of the Korean Association of Comparative Criminal Law, among other positions. He currently serves as Chair of the Education Committee of the National Education, Science and Technology Advisory Council, a member of the government's Saemangeum Committee, and a member of the Social Integration Committee.
