Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) is providing youths in the Jeonbuk region with new opportunities to experience scientific culture and interdisciplinary education through voluntary educational volunteering by students in the science and engineering fields.

The protagonists of the educational volunteering were ten science and engineering students known as the 'STEAM Storytellers.' From February 1 to 3, 2013, they held the '2013 Eco&STEAM Winter Science Camp' at venues including Jeonju Geunyoung Girls' High School and Moaksan Youth Hostel.

As members of the founding committee of the Honam branch of the Korea University Students' Educational Volunteering Corps, they shared nine programs they had planned themselves — including science plays, experimental lecture-dramas, and hands-on science lectures — with over 200 youths in the Jeonbuk region.

This educational volunteering activity, carried out by the students themselves to explore ways to revitalize interdisciplinary talent education, differed from conventional science volunteering. It was conducted as an experiential program in the form of "Science On Stage," combining science and technology, interdisciplinary education, arts and culture, and creative experiences.

Through this, they provided young people with an opportunity to engage with science more easily. It was also regarded as an occasion to help youths recognize that science is an intellectual product that can be enjoyed culturally, like a concert or musical.

Lee Geoseong, the student who led this educational volunteering, said, "We will strive to expand and operate hands-on educational volunteering programs through continued cooperation with the university and the provincial Office of Education, in order to contribute to the spread of scientific culture and to creative education."
