Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) has appointed Lee Kang-guk, former President of the Constitutional Court, as a Distinguished Professor at the Law School.
Accordingly, the former President of the Constitutional Court will undertake lectures, seminars, and research advisory activities at the Law School.
Particularly, regarded as a figure who, over more than 40 years in the legal profession, helped lay the legal and institutional foundations of the Constitutional Court, the former President will regularly lecture on constitutional law, constitutional adjudication, and civil and criminal trials.
He also plans to actively engage in training future generations by giving students lectures on the career paths legal professionals should pursue and on legal ethics, as well as through general education courses.
President Seo Geoseok said, "We are very pleased and honored to welcome Lee Kang-guk, a true legal professional who, as the country's most senior legal figure, loved the people more than anyone, as a Distinguished Professor at our university," and added, "I hope he will convey to our students the beautiful traces of a life lived uprightly as a legal professional."
A native of Imsil, Jeollabuk Province, the former President Lee Kang-guk entered the legal profession after passing the 8th National Judicial Examination immediately after graduating from Seoul National University School of Law in 1967. He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2000, completed his term as a Supreme Court Justice in 2006, and in January 2007 assumed office as the 4th President of the Constitutional Court. He completed his six-year term and held a graceful retirement ceremony on January 21.
He participated as a working committee member at the time of the enactment of the Constitutional Court Act in 1988, helping to lay the legal and institutional foundations of the current Constitutional Court. He also made a significant contribution to holding the 3rd World Conference of Constitutional Justice — where heads of constitutional adjudication bodies from some 120 countries worldwide gather to discuss constitutional adjudication — in Korea in 2014.
