JBNU has been selected as the operating institution for the 'Youth Hanok Construction Experience Camp,' a pilot program conducted this year by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, reaffirming its status as a national center for hanok-related education.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs announced that it selected JBNU to carry out the Youth Hanok Construction Experience Camp to promote understanding of traditional architecture and stimulate interest in hanok.

The program aims to inspire interest in and pride about traditional architecture and hanok among young people—future potential architects—at a time when interest in hanok is increasing in the era of environmentally friendly green growth.

The Ministry noted that JBNU has the best track record, educational conditions, and infrastructure related to hanok among universities and institutions nationwide, and has consistently produced outstanding results, leading to its selection as the implementing institution.

Accordingly, JBNU will announce recruitment in November for middle and high school students nationwide, select 100 participants recommended by their school principals, and provide substantive hanok education twice—on December 7 and 22—at the main campus and Gochang Campus.

The application period runs from November 20 to December 2. Applicants may download the application form from the website (Academic Notices) and submit it by mail, in person, or by email(ksunys@jbnu.ac.kr).

In particular, during recruitment JBNU will separately select, outside the quota, general youths as well as children from multicultural families, young heads of households, children of recipients of basic livelihood security, and students with disabilities, thereby focusing on education for socially disadvantaged groups. In addition, outstanding students will receive various awards, including the Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Award and the JBNU President's Award.

The training will include theoretical instruction as well as a special lecture by Important Intangible Cultural Property master carpenter Choi Ki‑young, a field visit to Jeonju Hanok Village, and hanok model-making practical sessions at the Gochang Campus, providing diverse hanok-related education.

JBNU conducts professional hanok education programs for licensed architects and prospective architects through the Hanok Technology Integration Center (Center Director: Professor Nam Hae‑gyeong) and has been selected by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs as an outstanding training institution for two consecutive years.

Additionally, the Gochang Campus has established a top-level hanok construction practice facility to carry out a hanok skilled workforce training project, and the graduate program offers the country's only hanok major, providing excellent education. During vacations, JBNU also runs an international school offering hanok education programs for foreigners, thereby introducing Korea's traditional architecture and culture to international participants.

Moreover, JBNU has appointed Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 74, master carpenter Choi Ki‑young, as an adjunct professor this year and is devoting efforts to students' employment through industry–university collaboration. It has also signed a hanok agreement with Jeonju City to build hanok public buildings annually in Jeonju and to carry out annual volunteer activities to repair aging homes free of charge.

Nam Hae‑gyeong, Director of Campus Development, said, "As part of the 'Korean-Style Campus Development Project,' JBNU is solidly combining theoretical and practical hanok education and promoting the remodeling of campus buildings into hanok-style structures, making it a center for hanok education. We will continue to strengthen the hanok education program so that the university can grow into the most authentically Korean global prestigious university."
