Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) has been found to have the highest level of student service satisfaction among national universities.
This follows the results of the Korea Service Quality Index (KS-SQI) survey jointly conducted and published by the Korean Standards Association (KSA) and JoongAng Ilbo. JBNU received the highest score among regional national universities and ranked first in service satisfaction.
Accordingly, JBNU received a certificate at an awards ceremony for first-place institutions held at the Grand InterContinental Seoul on October 23 at 9:30 a.m.
The evaluation was conducted from June to August over a two-month period, closely examining student satisfaction with the university through one-on-one interviews and online panel surveys of enrolled students excluding first-year students.
This year, JBNU reduced tuition by the largest amount among regional national universities yet substantially increased scholarships, resulting in scholarship disbursements approaching 50% of tuition revenue, so that students can concentrate on their studies without financial burdens.
In addition, JBNU has continuously improved student welfare by constructing the country's largest, state-of-the-art residence hall with capacity for approximately 4,200 students, expanding study rooms, and remodeling dining facilities while diversifying menus.
In particular, being selected last year for the "Advancement of Undergraduate Education Leading Project (ACE Project)", which identifies the best teaching universities among about 200 institutions nationwide, and investing generously to strengthen basic and major education has also provided students with considerable satisfaction.
Moreover, practices that earned positive evaluations include the president personally collecting student opinions and reflecting them in university business through 'Dialogues with Students', and continuing communication efforts such as handing out snacks to students at the start of the semester and during midterm and final exams.
Recently, JBNU achieved notable results: it ranked fifth nationally and first among regional national universities in the 2012 Leiden Ranking measuring the proportion of top 10% highly cited papers by field, and it ranked sixth among domestic comprehensive universities in The Times (UK)-Thomson Reuters World University Rankings.
In addition, JBNU continued its reputation for high satisfaction, placing sixth nationwide in this year's JoongAng Ilbo evaluation for educational environment, fifth nationwide and first among national universities last year for scholarship and welfare satisfaction, and ninth nationwide for overall satisfaction.
President Seo Geoseok said, "By continuously improving educational conditions and maintaining constant communication with students, JBNU has become Korea's national representative university in student services in name and reality," and added, "We will continue to work to maintain our status as the nation's best in student education services through substantive improvements in education."
