“Living in Korea, I now bow to greet people as a sign of respect, and I can eat a lot of spicy food. I use chopsticks that once seemed so strange, and I take off my shoes when entering indoor spaces. Many aspects of my life have changed in Korea.” - Rafael John Dionisio (international student from the Philippines, 4th-year, Department of Nursing)
“Learning Korean is very difficult but also interesting. I think it is important not only to study Korean from textbooks, but to find and develop your own style of Korean.” - Shiho Itagaki (international student from Japan, 4th-year, Department of History)
On October 5, at Gujeongmun Alim Street, international students shared amusing stories about their study-abroad experiences in Korea in their tentative Korean. The university organized the academic event for international students during the Academic, Culture and Sports Festival.
At the Korean speech contest, in which eight international students participated, attendees heard about adapting to life in Korea, as well as the global
Korean Wave, reasons for choosing the university, and other candid personal stories.
A creative poetry-and-art exhibition featuring international students was also held. Ahead of Hangeul Day on October 9, it provided a meaningful opportunity for foreigners to personally experience the excellence and linguistic beauty of Hangeul.
Held under the theme "We are the one! We are One!", the event is held every early October to showcase the excellence of the Korean language to the university's international students and to provide opportunities for domestic students and international students to mingle. It has received strong support from foreign students.
Shiho Itagaki (an exchange student from Waseda University), who won the Korean speech contest that day, said, "I am very honored to participate in such a meaningful event where international students can experience the elegance of the Korean language and culture," and added, "While studying as an international student at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), I will strive to learn more about Korea's outstanding culture."
