"We will forever remember the noble intentions of the donors who gave love like the full moon of Chuseok."
The late Chairperson Han Su‑ok donated her entire fortune of 4 billion won to Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) after a lifetime of frugality and passed away last year. The late Choi Eun‑soon moved many by entrusting the entirety of the assets she had accumulated as a basket seller in 1997.
To pay full respects to the donors and to honor their noble intentions after death, JBNU—which has held memorial rites and visited their graves—visited their graves again this year on September 21, ahead of Chuseok.
On that day, Kim Sun‑hee, Vice‑President of the Office of Planning, along with officials from the Jeonbuk National University Development Foundation, faculty and staff, and scholarship recipients, visited the graves together to express gratitude to the donors.
The late Chairperson Han Su‑ok donated 4 billion won in 2010, saying that JBNU, having overcome the limitations of a regional university and risen to become one of the country's top universities, should cultivate outstanding local talent. JBNU provides the 'Cheongjeong Scholarship' to four students each semester.
The late Choi Eun‑soon donated approximately 390 million won in 1997, accumulated through a lifetime of selling baskets and sewing for hire; the 'Choi Eun‑soon Scholarship' is awarded to ten students each semester.
Kim Sun‑hee, Vice‑President of the Office of Planning, said, "We pay full respects to those who donated assets accumulated through a lifetime of frugality to support the cultivation of outstanding local talent, and we visit their graves on anniversaries and holidays every year to remember their noble intentions. We will do our best to nurture outstanding talent so that the great intentions they expressed during their lifetimes will not be in vain."
