Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) was found to have the second-highest technology transfer income among regional flagship national universities nationwide for the past year.
According to the "2011 Technology Transfer Income Status" recently disclosed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology via the University Information Disclosure System, Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) earned KRW 1,017,980,000 from technology transfers in 2011, ranking second among regional flagship national universities and 13th among all universities nationwide.
This represents a 60.4% increase from the previous year and is evidence that, despite being a regional flagship national university located in an area with a weak tax base, JBNU possesses some of the nation's most outstanding research and technologies.
JBNU trailed only Kyungpook National University in technology transfer income and outperformed other regional flagship universities located in regions with substantially larger economies than Jeollabuk-do.
In practice, income generated by transferring university-developed technologies to companies is regarded as one of the key indicators of a university's research competitiveness.
Last year, JBNU transferred several technologies to industry, including "fire-resistant wood" developed by Professor Hee-Jun Park of the Department of Housing Environmental Design; a postural balance training device technology by Professor Dae-Gyu Kwon of the Division of Biomedical Engineering; and "biocompatible quantum dots for molecular optical imaging and their manufacturing method" by Professor Hwan-Jung Jeong of the Medical School.
Nam-Pyo Cho, Vice-President of Industry-University Cooperation, said, "A high level of technology transfer income signifies a strong level of the university's research competitiveness and that it possesses many excellent technologies. We will transfer numerous outstanding research results and technologies developed at JBNU to many companies to help revitalize the local economy."
