Professor Gil-Seon Kang (Department of Polymer -Nano Science &Technology) has been appointed a Fellow—the highest honor—of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS). The appointment confirms his status as a world-leading scholar in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine using stem cells.
TERMIS has appointed Fellows for the first time in 15 years since its founding in 1998. This year, only 22 leading international scholars who produced the most significant research achievements in regenerative medicine using stem cells were selected as Fellows. Two individuals from Korea, including Professor Kang, were chosen.
After receiving his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1995, Professor Kang has devoted himself to research on bioartificial organs and pharmaceutical formulation development. To date, he has published approximately 300 papers in SCI-listed international journals and registered more than 70 patents, making significant contributions to the field.
Professor Kang, who has conducted active research in the areas of bioartificial organs and regenerative medicine, has played a central role in TERMIS for over the past 14 years. He has made major contributions to the development of new technologies in biocartilage, biobone, central nervous system regeneration, ocular regeneration, and novel functional smart scaffolds using stem cells.
Earlier this year, he was elected president-elect of the Asia–Pacific chapter of TERMIS, taking a lead in raising the profile of stem cell research in Korea. He also attracted global attention by publishing the world’s first handbook on functional scaffolds for regenerative medicine.
