Professor Chae Jeong-il (Medical School) has published research identifying the distinct characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which play a key role in cell therapy in the field of regenerative medicine, attracting attention from the academic community.

Professor Chae’s study demonstrated the characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from various human tissues, such as bone marrow, peripheral blood, and umbilical cord blood, and showed differences in cell properties when reintroduced into the body for therapeutic purposes.

This provides a foundation for maximizing the effectiveness of cell therapy in regenerative medicine by selecting and transplanting MSCs derived from different tissues according to the characteristics of a disease.

The study was published in Cord Blood News(http://www.connexoncreative.com), a news outlet reporting global research results in the field of stem cells.

For this research, Professor Chae cultured MSCs isolated from human peripheral blood, umbilical cord blood, and bone marrow separately, and transplanted the cells into laboratory animals to assess their effects in a clinical context.

The results confirmed differences in the amounts of proteins important for maintaining cell morphology, antioxidant activity, and detoxification. The study also demonstrated that these proteins are deeply involved in cell survival and migration.

Based on these findings, Professor Chae transplanted MSCs into wounded animals to predict MSC function in humans, and confirmed that cell populations that better maintain morphology and contain higher levels of proteins involved in antioxidant and detoxification functions produced greater wound-healing efficacy.

Professor Chae Jeong-il said, "This study combined stem cell research and proteomics to demonstrate the potential for establishing evaluation criteria for optimizing cell sourcing when using cells derived from various tissues for the treatment of different diseases. It can be effectively applied in future research on regenerative medicine using cell therapies and in the treatment of various cell-related disorders."
