Professor Kim Dae-seok (College of Engineering, Division of Mechanical System Engineering) and Professor Choi Byeong-suk (College of Human Ecology, Department of Housing Environmental Design) were selected as recipients of the 22nd Science and Technology Outstanding Paper Award presented by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies.
Professors Kim and Choi received the award at the 2012 Korea Science and Technology Annual Conference, held at COEX from July 4–6, 2012.
This award recognizes outstanding papers published in 2011 in domestic and international journals by Korean scientists. Papers recommended by their respective societies after rigorous review are selected by the Federation through field-specific and comprehensive evaluations as Science and Technology Outstanding Papers.
Professor Kim Dae-seok published the paper "Surface Form Measurement Using Single Shot Off-axis Fizeau Interferometry" last year in the English journal Journal of Optical Society of Korea, published by the Korean Optical Society, and was recommended by the society for the award.
This research presents a real-time three-dimensional measurement technology that overcomes the limitations of existing measurement methods. It was recognized as a foundational technology applicable to a wide range of advanced fields—from large-aperture optical systems in the space industry to micro- and nano-scale three-dimensional shape measurements in IT, BT, and NT—and received sole recommendation from the Korean Optical Society.
In addition, Professor Kim conducts research on real-time micro- and nano-scale three-dimensional measurement technologies using light. To date he has presented some 60 research results at domestic and international journals and conferences, including more than 30 SCI papers, and has registered over 20 domestic and international patents.
The other awardee, Professor Choi Byeong-suk, published the paper "The Effect of Childhood Place Attachment to Home on Residential Satisfaction" in a journal published by the Korean Housing Association and was recommended by the society.
This study identified the factors underlying children's place attachment to the home and examined whether place attachment can enhance residential satisfaction. It attracted attention in the field of housing environment studies.
Meanwhile, the Science and Technology Outstanding Paper Award has been presented annually by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies since 1991. The award aims to encourage researchers by recognizing scientists who have published excellent papers through creative research activities, and to contribute to the advancement and modernization of science and technology.
