"We are proud Jeonbuk National University (JBNU). When JBNU is shortened, it is called 'Jeondae'."
Students rolled up their sleeves to improve the name of JBNU, which for a long time has been mistakenly called 'Bukdae'.
The JBNU Student Council, along with students and staff, began distributing about 2,000 flyers bearing the campaign slogan "When JBNU is shortened, it is 'Jeondae'" at five heavily trafficked entrances, including Sinjeong Gate and Gujeong Gate, from 8:30 a.m. on May 31.
This is part of the JBNU Student Council's "Jeondae Love Campaign," under which it has been actively pursuing a name-use improvement movement since earlier this year. Students have been divided into groups to carry out promotional activities regularly, and promotional materials have been placed in shops in front of the campus to reinforce the image "JBNU = Jeondae."
The Student Council has also set up a "Name Error Center" to receive reports of incorrect signage or misused promotional wording and has continued to request corrections.
Kim Hwi-jung, Vice-President of the JBNU Student Council, who led the day's promotional activity, said, "We launched the campaign because the background behind shortening our university's name to 'Bukdae' contains a derogatory meaning, and we thought students should take the lead in improving it." He added, "Because this incorrect appellation can undermine the image of our university as it increases its competitiveness, we hope local residents will also use the name 'Jeondae'."
