The Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Museum (Director Kim Seung‑ok) is operating the 6th Museum University to promote the excellence of regional painting and calligraphy culture in commemoration of the university's 65th anniversary and the 2012 Jeonbuk Visit Year.

The Museum University, titled “Painting, Calligraphy, and Jeonbuk,” will be held in the museum auditorium for a total of 13 sessions every Wednesday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, from May 23, 2012 to October 10, 2012.

Applications are being accepted until May 18, 2012 for up to 100 participants. To apply, call the JBNU Museum (063-270-3488, 4088). The tuition fee is 70,000 won.

The program will begin with a lecture by Professor Emeritus An Hui‑jun of Seoul National University and will invite leading experts in painting and calligraphy to review the flow of Korean painting and works representative of Jeonbuk.

The curriculum includes lectures that allow in‑depth appreciation of regional painting and calligraphy culture, covering figures such as the first female painter Sunchang Seol (1429–1509); Hosengwan Choi Buk, known for numerous anecdotes in late Joseon painting history; Nanggok Choi Seok‑hwan, a master of Joseon monochrome painting; Seokjeong Lee Jeong‑jik, a leading figure in Honam literati painting; Seokji Chae Yong‑sin, who opened a new world of portraiture in the late Joseon period; the genealogies of calligraphers who laid the roots of the Jeonbuk calligraphic community; Changam Lee Sam‑man, who established our script style; and topics such as calligraphy as applied art and its popularization.

Museum Director Kim Seung‑ok said, “The 6th Museum University will broaden understanding of the characteristics of our region’s artworks and historical figures, and serve to enhance the excellence and pride of Jeonbuk’s cultural arts. By approaching the world of painting and calligraphy from diverse perspectives, we expect to comprehensively reexamine the lineage and flow of Jeonbuk calligraphy and painting and to compile research materials on Jeonbuk painting and calligraphy.”
