Professor Kil‑Sun Kang (Department of Polymer -Nano Science &Technology) has released the world's first comprehensive research volume compiling the latest findings on "scaffolds for regenerative medicine," which serve as the foundation for the growth of tissues that can replace biological functions. The publication has attracted significant attention from the academic community.
Professor Kang, supported by publication incentive research funding from Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), has published a roughly 1,000‑page volume on the manufacture, characterization, and clinical application of scaffolds for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine using stem cells, titled "Handbook of Intelligent Scaffold for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine."
Comprising 45 chapters, the volume introduces scaffolds—essential components for developing bio‑organs and tissues using stem cells—classified by polymer, metal, and ceramic materials. It comprehensively addresses new processing and manufacturing methods, theoretical foundations, and clinical applications.
In particular, by providing an integrated source of recent research results from global researchers applicable to bio‑organ research using stem cells, along with useful information needed for related research and applications, the book is expected to be of great assistance to researchers worldwide.
Professor Kang conducts research on sustained‑release drug delivery systems using medical polymers, generic and biosimilar pharmaceutical formulations, central nervous system regeneration, optic nerve regeneration using medical polymers and stem cells, and the development of musculoskeletal bio‑organs. He has produced more than 400 publications and filed over 70 patent applications.
Last year he was elected President‑Elect of the Asia‑Pacific chapter of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS‑AP Chapter). He serves on the editorial boards of leading journals in the field—Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine; International Journal of Stem Cell; Regenerative Research; Therapeutic Delivery; and World Journal of Stem Cell—and is Editor‑in‑Chief of the International Journal of Tissue Regeneration.
