The Center for Gifted Education in Science (Director Professor An Byung-joon) received an Excellent rating (Grade A) in an evaluation by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.
This places the Center among the nation's top institutions for three consecutive years out of 25 university-affiliated Centers for Gifted Education in Science, demonstrating that Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) has excellent capabilities in gifted education.
Established in 1998 as the 'Center for Gifted Education in Science,' and upgraded in 2003 to the Center for Gifted Education in Science (designated by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity), the Center is now in its 14th year serving elementary and secondary students in North Jeolla Province. Under the educational philosophy 'Fostering Future Scientists Who Illuminate the World'—which emphasizes creative, challenging inquiry and service—the Center identifies gifted students early, develops solid curricula and high-quality educational programs, and delivers differentiated gifted education.
Last year, the Center, which has taken the lead in providing gifted science education to underprivileged groups, also earned high marks by continuously operating science English classes to cultivate global talent and offering teacher professional development to establish a systematic framework for the selection and education of gifted students.
Professor An Byung-joon, Director of the Center for Gifted Education in Science, said, 'The reason our Center has been able to continue receiving favorable evaluations nationwide is the passionate efforts of our members and the steadfast support and encouragement of the parents.' He added, 'Going forward, the JBNU Center for Gifted Education in Science will do its utmost to present a model of creative talent to lead Korea's future and to build a leading foundation for gifted science education.'
