Jeonbuk National University (JBNU)'s student scholarships are expected to approach 50% of total tuition revenue for the 2012 academic year, indicating an effective realization of half-price tuition.
JBNU stated, "Despite reducing tuition by 5.6% this year, we increased scholarship awards by approximately KRW 14.6 billion compared with last year, and the total student scholarships are expected to amount to 48.2% of tuition revenue."
Through this year's tuition reduction, the university expects tuition revenue of approximately KRW 94.67 billion, while the total amount of scholarships to be awarded to students this year is estimated at about KRW 45.6 billion.
The large increase in scholarships from last year's KRW 31.0 billion is due to the 5.6% tuition cut, which enabled the university to receive roughly KRW 14.0 billion in government national scholarships and to expand scholarship funds through development donations, industry–university collaboration, and internal scholarship programs.
In last year's survey conducted by JoongAng Ilbo on student satisfaction with their university, JBNU ranked first among national universities in "satisfaction with scholarships and welfare benefits" and second among national universities in "tuition satisfaction." With the substantially increased scholarships this year, the university expects student satisfaction to rise further.
President Seo Geo-seok said, "Although JBNU has achieved one of the lowest tuition levels nationwide by significantly reducing tuition to share the burden with students and their parents, we have greatly increased scholarships and are thus taking the lead in realizing half-price tuition in both name and fact. We will continue to expand development funds and attract large National R&D Programs so that students can grow into outstanding individuals without the burden of tuition."
