JBNU will be reborn as South Korea's top smart campus.
JBNU and the SK Telecom Group (SK Broadband, SK Telecom) signed an agreement on February 29 at 3:00 PM to improve the information and communications environment and to begin building a ubiquitous campus.
The signing ceremony was attended by President Seo Geo-seok, Vice-President Shin Hyo-geun, and other university officials, as well as Park In-sik, CEO of SK Broadband, and Kim Jang-gi, Head of the Enterprise Business Division at SK Telecom.
Under this agreement, SK Broadband will install state-of-the-art IP switches and Internet telephony facilities on the Jeonju and Iksan campuses, and will establish dedicated campus network lines and a dedicated line between Jeonju and Iksan to enable Unified Communications (UC) services capable of managing various communication channels.
In addition, SK Telecom will install approximately 1,500 wireless access points across the Jeonju and Iksan campuses to provide Wi‑Fi service, which is expected to transform all areas of JBNU into Wi‑Fi zones with wireless Internet access.
The SK Telecom Group will also develop and provide smart campus groupware and a mobile library application, and will be responsible for deploying a video conferencing system as well as installing and relocating LED electronic display boards.
As a result, JBNU community members will be able to perform academic and administrative tasks on campus easily without constraints of time or place, and will be able to use smartphones for library entry, book browsing, and borrowing.
SK Broadband and SK Telecom plan to coordinate all deployment and development schedules so that full services can be available from September, when the second semester begins.
President Seo Geo-seok said, "It is very meaningful and welcome that we have joined forces with companies that represent the Republic of Korea to create JBNU's campus as the nation's leading ubiquitous campus. This agreement will enable the university to provide high-quality and diverse information and communication services to university members even as the ICT environment rapidly changes."
He added, "At JBNU, which is striving to improve student educational conditions, this initiative will allow students to access the Internet free of charge on campus via smartphones and to obtain campus information in real time, which is expected to greatly help improve satisfaction. We will implement radical improvements to academic administration to ensure JBNU becomes a model case of a smart campus and to strengthen the university's competitiveness."
Park In-sik, CEO of SK Broadband, said, "We will work with SK Telecom to build wired and wireless Internet environments at JBNU and to provide optimal academic services based on Smart ICT. We hope this project will be implemented quickly, that we will identify joint initiatives that the university and companies can pursue in the future, and that our friendly cooperative relationship will continue."
