The student science volunteer team composed of students of Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) was selected as an outstanding Science Sharing Activity Team in the '2011 Winter University Student Science Sharing Support Project' hosted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.
The award recipients are the 'Scientia Symphoniae (시엔티아 심포니에: Science Symphony) team', consisting of team leader Lee Geo-seong (Physics, 3rd year), Kim Mi-ji (Earth and Environmental Sciences, 3rd year), Kim Eun-young (Physics, 3rd year), Choi Mi-sun (Chemistry, 2nd year), and Kim Jae-hoon (Physics, 2nd year).
They were selected as an outstanding team at the '2011 Winter University Student Science Sharing Support Project' closing ceremony held at L Tower in Yangjae, Seoul, on February 9, and received the Chairman's Commendation from the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.
They are student science culture activists affiliated with the Science Synergy Center, a student-led organization for the dissemination of science culture established in the College of Natural Science. In January they conducted a science-sharing program for elementary students at Woorim Elementary School in Jeonju under the theme 'Science 4 Dream (Four Keys of Science to Realize Dreams)', which received favorable reviews.
In addition, team leader Lee Geo-seong previously won first place for an excellent science program proposal and first place as an outstanding science-sharing activity team in the 2010 Winter University Student Science Sharing Support Project, and this year he again had the honor of being selected as part of an outstanding science-sharing activity team.
The Scientia Symphoniae team has applied its various research and field activities related to the dissemination of science culture, conducted both inside and outside the university, to its science-sharing volunteer work. The student team directly developed science teaching and learning models and science education programs based on STEAM education. They also organized interdisciplinary science classes and workshops involving parents, overcoming the limitations of traditional university student science-sharing volunteer activities and demonstrating new possibilities.
Lee Geo-seong said, "Being selected as an outstanding activity team, we will continue sustained science-sharing through various science culture dissemination activities via the Science Synergy Center. We will also participate in mentoring for future university student science-sharing volunteer activities and actively share our know-how with other university student science volunteers."
