Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Broadcasting Station (UBS)'s submission, the video "I Want to Live Again and See the Sky," was selected as the Grand Prize winner in this year's university journalism awards hosted by SisaIN.
This 20-minute documentary tells the story of Lee Se‑jong, who was a JBNU student in May 1980 and the first to lose his life while resisting the military regime.
Beginning with scenes of martial law troops storming the university, the film shows how Lee Se‑jong's recognition as a victim of the May 18 democratization movement and as a national meritorious person was not a straightforward process. It also points out the problem that current students are ignoring or entirely unaware of past history.
In particular, the work includes interviews with many people, adding vividness, including Kim Jung‑gil (Class of '78, Department of Animal Science), a long‑time friend of Lee Se‑jong; Lee Se‑jeong, Lee Se‑jong's younger sister; and Professor Lee Dong‑geun (Medical School), who was the forensic physician in charge.
Produced in just over two months, the video received praise from the judges for its engaging structure, the technical finesse of its graphics and subtitles, and its impressive scenes revealing little‑known facts.
Notably, this is the first time a broadcast work has won the Grand Prize at this competition, which had previously awarded the top prize only to newspaper reporting. This is seen as national recognition of the value and excellence of the JBNU Broadcasting Station.
Jo Hye‑rim, a fourth‑year law student who participated in the production, said, "Although students show little interest, May 18 is an important event for us, and I wanted to inform people that our university had the first casualty." She added, "I thank the alumni and everyone who agreed to be interviewed, and I hope this will serve to honor the noble value of Lee Se‑jong's sacrifice."
Meanwhile, the work can be viewed again on the JBNU Broadcasting Station's website (http://cbubs.com), and the related article appears in SisaIN No. 226.
