JBNU was recognized for research excellence in the recently released 2026 THE World University Rankings by Subject. In particular, JBNU ranked first among flagship national universities in the Research Quality category, a key indicator of qualitative research performance, in the fields of Engineering and Natural Sciences, demonstrating its world-class research level.

According to this year’s results announced by THE (Times Higher Education), the UK-based global university ranking organization, JBNU entered the global rankings in seven of the 11 evaluated subject areas, solidifying its status as a research-focused university.

The most notable achievement in this evaluation is the Research Quality indicator. JBNU ranked first among flagship national universities in the fields of Engineering and Natural Sciences.

In particular, in Engineering the Citation impact and Research Strength indicators scored 61.5 and 64.1, respectively, representing up to more than a twofold advantage over competing flagship national universities. In Natural Sciences, JBNU also recorded a Citation impact score of 55, placing it first among flagship national universities.

This objectively demonstrates that JBNU faculty publications have significant global influence.

Looking at overall rankings, Natural Sciences rose into the top 100 globally year-on-year, and Social Sciences rose into the top 200. Engineering, a traditional strength, remained solidly within the global 401–500 band, reaffirming JBNU’s competitiveness at the top tier among flagship national universities.

In Engineering, JBNU also achieved high scores in Research Quality sub-indicators such as Research excellence and Research influence, driving qualitative growth in JBNU’s research. Additionally, scores increased overall year-on-year in areas including Life Sciences, Clinical & Health, and Computer Science, maintaining their positions in the global rankings.

This is also viewed as an indicator of the success of JBNU’s efforts to cultivate 'Global Top 100 Excellence in Subject Areas' and of the Glocal University 30 project. Through the Glocal project, JBNU aims to enter five subject areas into the QS World University Rankings by Subject top 100 and four subject areas into the top 200 by 2027.

In the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, 15 subject areas entered the ranked bands. In particular, Veterinary Medicine and Petroleum Engineering placed within the global top 100, and since then JBNU’s competitiveness in research areas has been repeatedly confirmed by external indicators.

President Yang Oh-bong said, 'This evaluation result demonstrates that our faculty members’ outstanding research capabilities are recognized worldwide, and it signifies the very high qualitative level of our research.' He added, 'We will continue to spare no support to further raise our status as a research-focused university and to stand shoulder to shoulder with world-class universities.'
