Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (Director: Professor Jeon Je-seong), together with the Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies and the ASEAN Research Institute at Busan University of Foreign Studies, will hold the '8th Southeast Asia Regional Trends Briefing' as a real-time webinar (online) over two days on January 22 (Thu) and 23 (Fri).
The Southeast Asia Regional Trends Briefing is an annual academic event in which contributors to the journal Southeast Asian Studies, published by the Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies, prepare a special issue each year and summarize and share reviews of regional developments. It has covered a wide range of topics, including politics, the economy, and foreign relations, as well as social and cultural changes and issues.
This year’s, the eighth, briefing will present a two-day series titled '2025 Country- and Region-Specific Trend Analysis,' providing country- and region-level analyses for Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN as a whole.
On the first day, January 22, presentations and discussions will address topics such as Vietnam’s dual strategy of discipline and autonomy, crisis management following Cambodia’s power succession, Myanmar’s normalized crises and the election phase, political instability in Thailand, and ASEAN’s uneven regional integration.
On the second day, discussions will focus on assessments of Malaysia’s Anwar-led unity government, political and social stability in Indonesia, Singapore’s political and economic strategies, the Philippine midterm elections, and the issue of Timor-Leste’s ASEAN membership.
After the briefing, the webinar recording will be edited and released on YouTube. The YouTube channel will offer various information on past Southeast Asian trends.
This event will be held online via ZOOM, and links will be provided only to pre-registered participants. Registration is possible via the dedicated link (https://bit.ly/KASEAS_JISEAS_8), and the Zoom meeting link will be sent by email one day before the event.
Professor Jeon Je-seong, Director of the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies at JBNU, said, "Given that the political and social changes in Southeast Asian countries are closely connected to Korean society, I hope this briefing will serve as a meaningful platform for sharing information not only with academia but also with the general public."
