Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) is assigning road names to major sections of the campus to both provide clearer building location information and strengthen the symbolic character of campus spaces. By revising the road-naming system, JBNU aims to improve wayfinding for members and visitors and, by giving each road segment a specific meaning, to more clearly express the campus identity.

JBNU decided to retain existing road names that are familiar and widely recognized by its community. The 'Geonji-daero', which runs from the main gate to the central plaza, and the 'Jayu-ro', which passes through Alimui Street, will keep their current names to preserve the campus's identity and symbolism.

Additionally, reflecting the university motto of "Freedom, Justice, Creativity," JBNU named the road adjacent to the Law School 'Jeong-ui-ro' and the roads adjacent to Changjo Hall 1 and 2, the Industry–Academia Convergence Plaza, and the Humanities and Social Sciences Building 'Changjo-ro.' Reflecting the characteristics of nearby colleges, the section adjacent to the Engineering Departments was named 'Gonghak-ro,' and roads associated with the agriculture and life sciences field were named 'Nongsaengmyeong-ro,' thereby adding academic symbolism.

A particularly notable name in this road-naming revision is 'Lee Se-jong-ro.' 'Lee Se-jong-ro' is named after Lee Se-jong, the first victim of the May 18 Democratic Movement and an alumnus of JBNU. The road name was assigned to the section connected to the JBNU student town where Lee Se-jong lost his life. Through this road name, JBNU intends to evoke the historical significance the community must remember in everyday life.

JBNU stated that it designated the road names after collecting opinions from members and considering factors such as access to colleges and connectivity between major buildings and facilities.

Yang O-bong, President of JBNU, said, "Campus road names are symbolic assets that, beyond simple wayfinding, reveal the university's history, values, and academic identity. Through the road-naming system, including Lee Se-jong-ro, I hope the university's intended values will be conveyed naturally along with more accurate campus guidance."
